The effects of the war on women are grossly overlooked. One out of seven US troops in the Iraq/Afghanistan occupations are women who serve in unprecedented numbers and also deal with the violence of sexual assault on top of the horrors of combat. Iraqi women, who are in the line of fire with their families, also face the violence of personal attacks from religious fundamentalists.
Wild Iris Media is producing Female Faces of War, a
documentary film on the impact of the Iraq war on women. The first
phase of the project Female Faces of War: Mothers, Sisters, Soldiers, a 20 minute pilot, was screened at the Seattle
Art Museum in October 2007 at a symposium on Women and the War in Iraq
sponsored by King County Washington Women Lawyers. A pre-release copy of the final, expanded film, Female Faces of War: The Untold Story was screened at the 2009 Seattle Human Rights Film Festival. Wild Iris Media is releasing the final version in 2010 and is seeking
support for distribution of the film.
This 49 minute documentary explores the impact of the Iraq war through the personal stories of individual women including:
● A military mother's reaction to the the news of her son's death in Iraq and her path to healing. ● The stories of Iraqi women as they fight for liberalization, peace and human rights in the extremely difficult environments of past and present Iraq. ● A soldier's experiences in a war zone and coming home haunted by intrusive thoughts and nightmares.
The response to the October 2nd screening was extremely positive and several organizations and national media requested permission to show the film when it is completed. Female Faces of War will be distributed through partnerships with community and activist organizations and by direct sales. If you are interested in sponsoring a screening please contact kb@wildirismedia.com.
It is our hope that hearts and minds will break wide open, that a new sensitivity to these issues will turn into compassionate action not complacency.
