Mainstream media have produced a few reports detailing the horrific crimes against women in Iraq. However, beyond mention of sectarianism, mainstream media seldom goes into any depth about Iraqi society. Are we to conclude that violence and oppression of women are inherent in Iraqi society?
Wild Iris Media is proud to present Iraqi Women: An Interview with Nadje Al-Ali, an interview that goes into depth about Iraqi society and Iraqi women, exploring the underlying causes of today's violent oppression of women. Based on a November 2007 interview, this 44 minute DVD is an amazingly engaging and informative discussion of Iraq, its history and its culture, especially as it relates to women.
Iraqi Women is the story of a society that was making
tremendous progress in the 60's and 70's, a time of prosperity and a
time when Iraqi women were the most liberated, educated and advanced in
the entire region. It is the story of a society ravaged by war, from
the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, through the 1991 Gulf war and 13 years
of sanctions and culminating in the invasion and occupation of 2003.
It is the story of how war changed Iraqi society and women's roles. It
is the story of the continuing struggles of women, from the Iraqi
Women's League of the 50's and 60's to the fight for the protection of
women's rights in the new Iraqi constitution. It is the story of the
incredible courage of the women who still organize and fight for
women's rights and for justice and peace in all of Iraqi society.
